Water & Sanitation

The water and sanitation initiative started in 2013 much ahead of the United Nations Sustainable Development goal of 'Universal access to clean water and sanitation' initiated in 2015.
The project started at Durgapur,Burdwan district. The tribal areas in the arid outskirts of Durgapur do not have an easy access to water and sanitation. We have installed several hand pumps and built toilets in villages like Kuldiha, Saranga,Charidanga,Bhallukkonda,Palashboni,Rangra and Sondhiara.

Clean Water SolutionsClean Water is emerging as the crux of public health issue in all developing countries, and rapid global warming leading to water scarcity is only adding up to the woe of downtrodden who, even after the swift urbanization in the country, still have to go through the painstaking process of walking & waiting for hours for a draught of the ‘liquid life.’ In the arid outskirts of West Bengal, Nirmaan has been instrumental in creating infrastructure for 24x7 clean drinking water facilities within the reach of plebeians since 2013. Our intervention has resulted in installation of 14 Hand Pumps in 6 villages around our command areas of Burdwan district to provide quality drinking water 24X7 through out the year. 2 free Water ATM units have been set up in Durgapur Township to address growing water shortages in the locality, catering to the urban slums in vicinity & passers-by.

Additionally, a Water Purifier unit set up in TrilokChandra Jariwala High School using cutting age modern Reverse Osmosis technology ensures the students have daily access to safe & pure drinking water


Impact:

More than 600 families suffering from acute water crisis in villages of Kuldiha, Sarenga, Bhalukkonda, Pslashboni, Sundiara & Rangre have been benefited from the Water & Sanitation initiative of Nirmaan. The water ATM and purifiers in the area have resulted in a fall of water-borne diseases in the area and boosting the habit of consuming clean water among students &localites .


Sanitation:

Unlike the miniscule number of metro-dwelling millennial, 2.8 billion people worldwide do not have access to basic sanitation facility. For a major chunk of Indians, a hygienic toilet equates to health, standard of living & most importantly dignity of women. Driven by the objective of Clean India Mission, the sanitation initiatives of Nirmaan have been earmarked for creating modern sanitation facilities accessible to the needy. In the tribal villages of Sundiara&Bhalukonda of .West Bengal, Nirmaan has constructed 2 public sanitation units with toilet/lavatory & bathroom facilities to address the issues of open defecation & contacting diarrhoeal diseases. With this, 2 Pay & Use Public bio-toilet units had also been made in the Durgapur Town Area around the market complex to curb the public urination tendency & imbibe better hygiene practice. For the low cost housing project in our command areas of West Bengal & Maharashtra, Nirmaan has broken new grounds by building more than 50 houses with attached toilet facilities, a first in that rural region.


Impact:

Apart from significantly improving the quality of life of 500+ beneficiaries with attached toilets facilities in Durgapur & Nashik, the sanitation intervention impacts more than 200 families in respective villages of Durgapur to adopt a healthier & hygienic lifestyle. The urban public toilet has also benefited the daily footfall of 2000-3000 people in Durgapur market area.


Hygiene:

Our health & well-being depends on our Hands. Handwashing is the most basic lesson in health & hygiene practices and undoubtedly the most essential too. To advocate the importance of good hand-hygiene to keep diseases at bay & promote handwashing behaviour change among community kids & families, Nirmaan had launched a WASH programme on 31st July 2019. The program consists of conducting periodic workshops in our mobile learning buses Pan-India with demonstrations of essential steps for cleaning hands, along with distribution of health cards, soaps & shampoo to raise awareness & hygienic habit formation among slum-dwelling population.


Impact:

The activity has resulted in more than 1000 kids and families across slum locations of Kolkata in last one year switching to clean habit & more regular student footfall in the bus locations due to drop in contaminated disease rate.
